Strategy formulation towards maximising business profits with minimum risk and costs in China
In the worst global downturn in decades we are facing now, is this the right time to import from China?
I would say “yes”. If you are smart, this is the perfect time to seize an opportunity to lower your operational costs, source from Asia or simply negotiate better prices for a mutually beneficial relationship with your counterparts in China.
In Poland, I am always being asked “ hey Darren, what should I import from China?”. Well, you should do some market research, do not import too many “ me too” products, try to find a niche market because you can’t compete with big retail players such as Carrefour and tesco. Also If you are considering importing from China, look at these top 10 products which make Chinese the number export country in the world. However, if we notice, we can almost source anything and everything from China now.
Ranking of products export by China in 2008:
1- Electronic
2- High Tech
3- Garment/Cloth
4- Computer
5- Textile Yarn & Fabric
6- Steel
7- Mobile Phone
8- Agriculture
9- Shoe
10- Furniture
In 2008, China total export of the world is around 8.8% and total import is 6.7%. Poland is the largest trade partner in central Europe, 9th in European Union. This again proves that China is the right place to source.
You might be worrying about the quality of Chinese products, well, do you actually pay attention on the quality control? Because I know many importers in Poland are more concerned about low prices than spending the right amount of money to control the quality of your ordered products.
Based on my observation, electronic items, cheap battery, building material are garments from China are few of the best sellers in Poland. It is absolutely fine if you tend to import something different than others because as I said, you need a niche market and not too many “me too” products.
